John Patton, Cadence Management Corporation President and CEO

John Patton, PMP, founded Cadence in 1983, leading the planning, organization and startup activities for the company. From the outset, it was John’s vision to be a premier provider of project management training, consulting services, and support tools, a target which was achieved.  In 2009, Cadence was awarded the coveted PMI Provider of the Year Award.  John retired from his position of President/CEO at the end of 2015.

The Cadence mission is connecting people worldwide and transforming businesses through project management. John’s assignments included the creation of an international program of licensing Cadence training to consulting firms in Asia, Latin America and Europe. This enabled Cadence’s global project methodology to be taught by local seminar leaders in the local language of the country. This network is key to multi-national companies’ designs to use a consistent project management approach worldwide.

John’s leadership in the development and dissemination of state-of-the-art project management techniques has established him as one of the industry’s leading thought leaders. As one seminar attendee put it: “He makes change more comfortable. He supports his answers to questions and the principles he teaches with a wealth of personal experience.”

John’s consulting and training experience includes assignments on numerous multi-million dollar new product development projects around the world. He is bilingual in Spanish, and has additional abilities with French, Catalan, German and Italian:

  • Has delivered the entire bandwidth of the Cadence portfolio:  From the Organizational Project Management (OPM) series – Project Management, Program Management, Portfolio Management, Managing Project Management, and Executive Briefings – to the specific focus series of topics – risk, scope, schedule, personal skills, refresher training and the Advanced Colloquium in Project Management.
  • Has extensive global experience in delivering over 1000 seminars ranging from ½ day to 3 days in duration in a variety of cultures, a total of forty countries.
  • Provided project consulting and training services in variety of companies and industries – electronics, banking, medical devices, government agencies, aerospace, manufacturing, food, technology, utilities, telecommunications, and others.  Assignments include: Fujitsu, Boston Scientific, Intuitive Surgical, AkzoNobel, Frito-Lay, KFC, Logitech, General Motors, Honeywell, OfficeMax, Nike and eBay.

He is an active member in the Project Management Institute (PMI), and certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP). Appointed by PMI, John was the chair of the OPM3 (best practices standard) Certification Committee for 2006-2008. He has been a panelist and discussion leader for PMI’s Research Working sessions prior to Global Congresses.  As a member of a 5-person editorial board which researched project complexity over a 2 ½ year period, a book, Aspects of Complexity:  Managing Projects in a Complex World, was published in June 2011.

John was elected to the Board of Directors for the PMI Educational Foundation in 2011.  In 2013, he was elected to the position of Board Chair.

John has degrees from the University of Oregon, University of Barcelona (Spain), and Portland State University.
